I've had both amplifiers and speakers with low THD and I didn't like it as a system. What this subjectively sounds like is you keep turning up the volume to make it sound "loud" ((the speakers themselves will start to distort (increase in harmonic distortion) with an increase in power)). 83-86 dB at the listening position is very safe.Ĭlass A/B & Class D designs (and all others than class A to my knowledge) generally decrease distortion with an increase in power (at least with the power that matters). Basically this means you get to experience "loud" music without damaging your hearing as much or at all.

Again, this can be considered a good thing as the music will sound "loud" at a lower physical sound intensity. This increase in harmonic distortion makes the perceived sound intensity higher than it actually is. So when you're listening to dynamic changes in music (the song getter louder and quieter), the amplifier is mimicking the "natural" increase in harmonic distortion with loudness. Everything in nature that creates sound will show increasing harmonic structure (harmonic distortion) as the sound intensity of said object gets louder. The more power they put out, the more they distort. Although if you measured the sound intensity with a mic, it would be the same.Ĭlass A SET (Single ended triode) designs have monotonic distortion products which rise with power output. And long story short, yes 8 class A tube watts will be (perceived) louder than 8 solid state (Class A/B, D, & others) watts. I'm sure some people will argue with me, but the short answer is that yes, that they are different. Subreddit's theme is /r/Minimaluminiumalism.
